morast , m. sumpffläche, sumpf und kot; wie die undeutsche betonung morást zeigt, ein lehnwort. es ist zunächst im mnd. als moras vorhanden ( Schiller-Lübben 3, 118 a ), und hier wol in begrifflicher anlehnung an das niederd. môr moor; im mnl. als marasch i. maerasch palus, lacus ( Kilian ), welche form auf altfranz. maresc lache, sumpf zurückgeht, und damit in das romanische gebiet weist: franz. später marais, wallonisch maras, im Hennegau marache, ital. marese, mittellat. mariscus, sämmtlich ableitungen von mare, was auch ansammlung von wasser, teich u. ähnl. bedeuten konnte ( vergl.
