Pw 65,11 (aruithi?, Ausg. aruith). 1) Drangsal, Beschwerlichkeit, Mühsal; im christlichen Sinn vor allem die Anfechtung, in der der Christ seinen Glauben bewähren soll: Egipti arapaiti Aegyptus tribulatio Gl 1,52,3 (vgl. Wutz, Onom. 425). arapeitun [ut ... peccatorum vulnera in] ... afflictionibus [vulneratus sanet, Greg., Hom. i, 17 p. 1498] 2,290,3 (1 Hs. arbeit f.). aruithon [ex omnibus] tribulationibus [meis eripuit me, Ps. 33,5] GlL 37. aruithi [in] tribulatione [invocasti me, ebda. 80,8] 39. thu ... sattos aruithi an ruggi unsin posuisti tribulationes in dorso nostro Pw 65,11. sprac munt min an aruithi mina locutum est os meum in tribulatione mea 14. Eccli. 16,21 Sab. Laa., Vulg. procellam, doch vgl. gr. καὶ καταιγὶς, ἣν ...] Gl 1,571,37; vgl. aber auch unten 2. [2) Unklar bleibt die Straßburger Glosse aruithi dispendium Wa 108,12. Sie steht ohne Textzusammenhang am Ende von Glossen zu Isidors Etymologien. Das lateinische Lemma läßt unter Anlehnung an ‘Mühsal’, s. o. 1, an ‘(vergeblicher) Aufwand an Mühe’ denken, vgl. Georges, Handwb. i, 2,2213. In den altengl. Corpusglossen ist dispendium mit wóm ‘sound, noise’ übersetzt, vgl. Sweet OET Nr. 679, CGL 5,408,13. Zu wóm vgl. ðær is wom and wop wide gehered, and gristbitunge, and gnornunge mecga, Bosw.-T. s. v., was dem arbeiti tribulatio sehr nahekommt und an ähnliche Formeln
