Misanthrop m. ‘Menschenfeind, -hasser, -verächter’, Übernahme (17. Jh.) von gleichbed. frz. misanthrope (daher zunächst in frz. Schreibweise), das durch Molières Komödie (1666) bekannt wird. Dies ist eine Entlehnung (Rabelais, 1552) aus griech. misánthrōpos (μισάνθρωπος), zu griech. misé͞in (μισεῖν) ‘hassen’ und ánthrōpos (ἄνθρωπος) ‘Mensch’, gebildet als Gegenwort zu griech. philánthrōpos (φιλάνθρωπος) ‘menschenfreundlich, gütig, Menschenfreund’ (s. phil-), woraus Philanthrop m. ‘Menschenfreund, Wohltäter’ (18.
