Swete

Swete (spr. ßwīt), Henry Barclay, anglikan. Theolog, geb. 14. März 1835 in Redlands (Bristol), war 1869–77 Dean des Caius College in Cambridge, 1877–90 Rektor in Ashdon (Essex), 1882–1890 Professor der Pastoraltheologie am King's College in London und ist seit 1890 Professor der Theologie in Cambridge. Er schrieb unter anderm: »Two essays on the history of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit« (1873 u. 1876); »The Apostles' creed in relation to primitive christianity« (3. Aufl. 1899); »Faith in relation to creed, thought and life« (1895); »Church services and service books before the Reformation« (1896); »An introduction to the Old Testament in Greek« (u. Aufl. 1902); »Patristic study« (1902); »Studies in the teaching of our Lord« (1903). Außerdem gab er des Theodor von Mopsuhestia (s. d.) Kommentar zu den Paulinischen Briefen (1880–82, 2 Bde.), das Markusevangelium (2. Aufl. 1902), die Offenbarung des Johannes (1906) und die Septuaginta (»The Old Testament in Greek«, 2. Aufl., Cambr. 1895–99, 3 Bde.) heraus.
